The first measurements of the CurieuzeNeuzen sensors in the potato fields
Last summer extreme rainfall caused devastating floods in the South of Belgium. This summer we’re experiencing a major drought, the fifth in the last six years! These extreme weather conditions are not any longer exceptional. And while many of us love a warm and dry summer season, these extreme conditions are devastating for our natural environment, well-being and economy. The agricultural sector is hit hard by the rapidly changing climate and faces unprecedented challenges.
The potato cultivation for example, flourishes in the typical “Belgian weather” with regular rainfall and moderate temperatures. Long episodes of drought, heat waves and intensive rains lead to an inferior quality and decreased production. Will our potatoes be fried before the yield? We took a look at the first measurements of the 200 CurieuzeNeuzen sensors that were again installed over several potato fields across Flanders. While the sensors will collect data until the end of the growing season, the measurements are updated every day via WatchITgrow.
